Trumpeter Chase Sanborn has been on the U of T Jazz faculty since the inception of the program in the early 1990s, and has been a core member of the full-time faculty since 2010. He currently holds the rank of Associate Professor, Teaching Stream.

Chase grew up in New York, attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, and launched his full-time playing career in San Francisco. A highlight of his early years was a year spent on the road with Ray Charles, touring the US and Europe.

Chase moved to Toronto in 1981 and since that time has been an integral player in the jazz and commercial music scene. He has released five CDs as a leader, and worked as a session player on thousands of commercial recording sessions and large-scale theatre productions.

A Yamaha Artist for more than two decades, Chase has presented clinics throughout the US and Canada. He has published a series of seven books on playing and teaching music, and most recently has been active on YouTube, producing scores of videos on brass playing, jazz improvisation and the business of  being a musician.

Chase serves on the Board of Directors for the International Trumpet Guild, and also as an editor and columnist for the ITG Journal.

Refreshed after a year-long sabbatical, Chase is looking forward to being back in the midst of the hotbed of talent and inspiration that is U of T Jazz!
