Chase Sanborn

Applied Trumpet
Small Jazz Ensemble

Trumpeter Chase Sanborn has been on the U of T Jazz faculty since the inception of the program in the early 1990s. He currently holds the rank of Associate Professor, Teaching Stream.

After attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, a highlight of his early playing career was a year spent touring the US and Europe with Ray Charles. Since moving to Toronto in 1981, Chase has been an integral player in the jazz and commercial music scene. As a session player, he has performed on thousands of commercial recording sessions and large-scale theatre productions. He has released five CDs as a leader and presented hundreds of clinics and concerts as a Yamaha Artist in the US, Canada and Japan. He served on the Board of Directors for the International Trumpet Guild and as an editor for the ITG Journal for more than a decade.

Pedagogically, Chase has published a series of seven books on jazz improvisation, brass playing and the business of being a musician. In recent years he has posted hundreds of YouTube videos relating to the same topics.

Having watched many of his former U of T Jazz students become professional colleagues, Chase looks forward each year to interacting with those who aspire to join the ranks!
