Faculty at UofT Jazz

The University of Toronto Jazz program is home to Canada's most respected professors and jazz musicians. The full time faculty and instructors are passionate about teaching and love teaching. They teach and teach and we need some kind of text here as an introduction to our amazing professors. We love our teachers and want to make us seem really awesome here.

A Message from Jim Lewis

Jazz Area Chair

The Jazz Faculty at The University of Toronto represents a significant cross-section of creative professional jazz musicians and improvisers from in and around the Toronto area.  All of the Jazz Faculty can be heard in clubs and at Festivals in Toronto, across Canada, and on the international stage.  All have significant recordings to their credit, and many are JUNO nominees and/or winners.

The full time Faculty collaborates closely with Sessional Faculty to ensure a strong continuous trajectory of creative learning and opportunities for all of our students.

This program has a very strong emphasis on Composition and Arranging, and our Faculty and Sessional Instructors encourage original music and arrangements in all ensembles. Outside of the curriculum independent projects flourish, are always encouraged, and are often guided by our Faculty.

The Jazz Studies Area is a creative melting pot of Faculty and students. Mentorship opportunities are plentiful. Many alumni, and even some current students can be heard around Toronto performing with Faculty in local clubs, and working on creative performance and recording projects.

It is a great privilege for me to continue to build on the strong history of Jazz at U of T, and to work with such an exceptional group of Faculty and students every day, in such an artistically challenging environment.
