Parmela Attariwala

Described as ‘one of Canada’s most original and compelling artists’, violinist/violist Parmela Attariwala has been involved in boundary-stretching and genre-crossing music and performance since moving to Toronto in 1994. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance from Indiana University, and a Masters’ Degree in Ethnomusicology from the School of Oriental and African Studies in the UK. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in ethnomusicology and pluralism studies at the University of Toronto.
Parmela has toured and recorded with a diverse array of musicians including Carla Bley, Ravi Naimpally, James Campbell, Anthony Braxton, Ed Hanley and Quinsin Nachoff. She has collaborated with choreographers in dance styles ranging from butoh to contact to bharata-natyam. Her trio, the Attar Project, combines the avant-garde sound and dance worlds of Canada and India. An ardent improviser, Parmela is a member of The Human Remains, Coyote and partner with butoh artist Claudia Wittmann in Zufall. She can be seen performing contemporary composed music with the Esprit Orchestra, Toca Loca and the Queen of Puddings Theatre Company.
Parmela Attariwala has released two critically-acclaimed recordings: Beauty Enthralled (1997); and Sapphire Skies (2003), the latter of which features her own compositions. Wholenote magazine calls it a ‘recording to treasure’.
