Oct 8: Hobson’s Choice
Hobson’s Choice is a Toronto-based Indie chamber folk collective featuring U of T Jazz alumni Harley Card on guitar and Rebecca Hennessey on trumpet, with Felicity Williams, vocals, and Michael Davidson on vibraphone. Over the last two years the group has garnered attention for its unique instrumentation and inventive orchestration. The masterclass will demonstrate the group’s specific approach to writing, arranging, and internalizing their music.

Oct 29: Carol Welsman
Vocalist/Pianist Carol Welsman is a former U of T Faculty member who now resides in Los Angeles. Carol sings in several languages and her music integrates a variety of genres. She has released eight CDs, her most recent is a tribute to Peggy Lee.
An independent record label entrepreneur, Carol has sold over 60,000 CDs in Canada alone–a remarkable feat–and is a five-time Juno nominee. Carol will share her thoughts on the care, feeding, promotion and marketing of the jazz artist.
November 26: William Carn
March 25: Tara Davidson: Confessions of a mid-career artist.
It wasn’t all that long ago that saxophonist/composer Tara Davidson was a student at U of T Jazz. Now, according to a recent Canada Council grant application, she is a ‘mid-career artist’. This clinic focuses on musical momentum–keeping the creative fires burning after you leave school and throughout your career.
The Juno-nominated Tara Davidson Group includes U of T Jazz alumni Jamie Reynolds on piano and Jon Maharaj on bass, with Fabio Ragnelli on drums. This clinic coincides with a gig at the REX, culminating a 13 stop cross-country tour.
U of T MASTERCLASSES
Once each term, instrumental masterclasses are presented by a member of the U of T Jazz faculty or a visiting guest artist. The public is welcome to watch as our students play in front of their peers, and receive comments and suggestions.
