Jazz Primer Series

jazz_logoU of T Jazz offers a 4-part Jazz Primer Series intended for secondary school students. Teachers are also welcome!

The primers cover many aspects of jazz performance and skill development, including masterclasses by U of T Jazz Studies Creative Professional Faculty, and direct interaction with U of T Jazz students and alumni who can answer questions about their own experience as a jazz student at the University of Toronto and beyond.

Primers run Saturdays at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music South, at 90 Wellesley Street West, from 10 AM to 4 PM. Enroll in the entire series at a discounted rate or choose the individual sessions that suit your needs and interest.

Jazz Primer I: Jazz Skills / Vocal Jazz (October 27, 2018)
Jazz Primer I focuses on jazz performance and skill development including Ear Training/Listening, Improvisation, and Small Group Jazz Performance. The Vocal Jazz Primer addresses voice-specific skills and development.

Jazz Primer II: Jazz Audition A (Nov 24, 2018)
Jazz Primer II offers practical seminars related to post-secondary audition expectations including Materials of Jazz Theory, Ear Training, and Improvisation. Participants will receive one-on-one assessment of current preparation and skill level.

Jazz Primer III: Jazz Audition B (Jan 19, 2019)
Jazz Primer III offers advanced seminars related to audition expectations in Materials of Jazz Theory, Ear Training, and Improvisation. It includes a Mock Audition session.

Jazz Primer IV: Small Group Performance (May 4, 2019)
In Jazz Primer IV, students concentrate on small group jazz performance skills and putting together a finished product. This session is recommended as a tune-up for festival and concert performances. Preexisting groups are welcome and encouraged.
